Anyone who wants to study in Germany and attends a Studienkolleg first will sooner or later ask themselves the same question: Is a B2 certificate enough, or do I already need a C1?

The answer is: It depends on the specific Studienkolleg. Many Studienkollegs require at least B2, while others require C1 proficiency. Regardless of the admission requirements, however, the following applies: The better your German skills are, the greater your chances of success on the placement exam (FSP). Nevertheless, many students initially find the transition challenging. Academic language, in particular, differs significantly from general German instruction. Because students continue to actively learn the language (up to C1) and actively acquire subject-specific knowledge in class, they automatically learn the technical terms required for their field of study.

Since students are generally required to have a B2 level to begin the preparatory year, a C1 level is required for admission to both the internal and external FSP. This is because a C1 level or higher is mandatory for enrollment at a German university.
