New to Germany? The Most Important Do’s & Don’ts for Students
You are new to Germany? Then you may notice that some everyday habits and rules are different from what you are used to. These 4 Do’s and 4 Don’ts can help you settle into everyday life more easily.
4 Do’s
1. Plan your week
Most shops and supermarkets in Germany are closed on Sundays. Plan your shopping and important errands in advance. A weekly schedule can also help you organize your study time, appointments and free time.
2. Speak German whenever you can
Use everyday situations to practise: when shopping, on public transport, in a café or with your classmates. You do not have to speak perfectly. The more you use German, the more confident you will become.
3. Be on time
Punctuality is important for classes, appointments and meetings. Plan enough time for your journey. If you are going to be late, let the other person know as early as possible.
4. Take care of important appointments and deadlines early
Appointments with authorities, registrations and university application deadlines can take time. Keep track of important dates and take care of them early.
4 Don’ts
1. Don’t throw all your rubbish together
Waste is separated in Germany. Depending on where you live, there are different bins for paper, organic waste, packaging and general waste. Find out which rules apply where you live.
2. Don’t make unnecessary noise
If you live in an apartment building, be considerate of your neighbours. Especially during quiet hours, avoid loud music, parties and other disruptive noise.
3. Don’t ignore important letters and emails
Letters and emails from authorities, your university, health insurance provider or landlord may contain important information or deadlines. Check your messages and mail regularly and respond on time.
4. Don’t stay only within your own community
Meeting people from your home country can be a great support. At the same time, try to meet people from Germany and other countries. This can help you practise German and discover different perspectives and experiences.
